Kyoto Temple Walking Tour — Higashiyama District

Walk through Kyoto's most atmospheric neighborhood. This self-guided tour covers 5 iconic temples and shrines in one day.

The Route

This walking tour covers the Higashiyama district from south to north. Start early (8 AM) to avoid crowds.

Stop 1: Kiyomizu-dera

The most famous temple in Kyoto, known for its wooden stage that juts out over the hillside. The temple was founded in 778 and offers panoramic views of the city.

Time needed: 45-60 minutes

Tip: The approach street (Kiyomizu-zaka) has great souvenir shops and matcha ice cream.

Stop 2: Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka

These historic lanes connect Kiyomizu-dera to the next stops. The preserved wooden buildings now house cafes and shops. Watch your step on the stone stairs — legend says if you stumble on Sannenzaka, you’ll have bad luck for 3 years.

Stop 3: Kodaiji Temple

A quieter alternative to the bigger temples. The zen garden here is one of Kyoto’s finest. In autumn, the night illumination is spectacular.

Time needed: 30-40 minutes

Stop 4: Maruyama Park

Take a break in Kyoto’s most popular park. In spring, the weeping cherry tree at the center is absolutely stunning.

Stop 5: Yasaka Shrine

End your walk at this vibrant shrine at the edge of the Gion district. Free to enter, and the evening atmosphere is magical.
